I picked this Holiday calendar

This one syncs properly with Palm. The Monday holidays -- and Thanksgiving -- from Apple's holiday calendar do not sync to my Palm. Thanks iCalShare!

Sorry about that. (I've never really celebrated Flag Day, so it's not really on my radar.)

This calendar now contains Flag Day, so feel free to update your subcriptions...

Daylight Saving Time

In the US it begins on the first Sunday in April and Ends the last Sunday in October.

repeats?
Posted by Anonymous on February 1, 2003 @ 10:27PM
I've had to give up on apple's holiday calendar, since it doesn't sync right. (Glad to see someone else has that problem, because I have not been getting ANY help from the discussions.) My only problem with this one is that nothing repeats. Will that be a future thing?
Also- I think the october daylight savings is wrong- i THINK it's the LAST sunday in october.

Repeats

As soon as I get a chance, I'll update this calendar with repeating events (automatic and manual) through the next couple of years. Not to worry...

Would be much more usefull if it didn't stop after only 5 months. 2004 US holidays must still be classified for national security reasons! ; )

Cinco de Mayo is not a US holiday, and isn't really celebrated all that much in Mexico, either.

Cinco de Mayo is just for fun
Posted by iCalShare on May 27, 2003 @ 1:12PM
Yes, Cinco de Mayo is not an official US holiday. But it *is* celebrated throughout the Southwest (and in other Latino communities around the country).

You can read more about it here.

Hiroshima Day explained...
Posted by iCalShare on May 27, 2003 @ 1:06PM
"Hiroshima Day is observed in many parts of the world with special vigils and peace marches. It is held to commemorate the dropping of the first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945."

Hiroshima Day Depressing

We don't have D Day or Sept 11 on this calendar. I don't want to have depressing or overly political things on my calendar.

I have to agree that Hiroshima Day is a misguided bit of sentimentalism. I'll certainly delete it as you suggest but I concur with the previous comment. I won't waste my grief on that one.

Cinco de Mayo
Posted by Anonymous on July 28, 2004 @ 1:39PM
There are many dates in this calendar that are not "U.S. Holidays", just days that many people would like to know. In case you didn't know, Hispanics are now (2000 Census) the largest minority group in America and those of Mexican descent are the largest sub-group. In some parts of the U.S. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated widely in the local community, with many non-Hispanics also enjoying the festivities (food, music, etc.).

Cinco de Mayo
Posted by Anonymous on September 25, 2004 @ 2:22PM
What about Cinco de Mustardo, or Cinco de Ketchupo? ;)

While it is true that hispanics are the largest minority in the U.S., Cinco de Mayo is not an 'hispanic holiday', it is a Mexican holiday. My point is that not all hispanics are not Mexican heritage. (My friends of Cuban heritage are quick to point out this fact.) While folks of Mexican heritage are the largest component of the hispanic population in the U.S. they *are* only one component.

Useful for some
Posted by Anonymous on October 29, 2005 @ 10:11AM
I have been to communities where Latinos celebrate ethnic pride on days other than Cinco de Mayo. However, where I live it is a *huge* holiday with events in several parts of town. It is useful to remember it's out there.

Cinco De Mayo
Posted by Anonymous on November 24, 2005 @ 7:48PM
It still IS NOT a US Holiday and I do not think it should be listed on our calendars. If you want to hold on to Mexican culture, Mexican language and Mexican holidays - Go back to Mexico. Don't try to turn the US into an extension of Mexico. If you want to come over here and be an American, welcome.

Cinco de Mayo
Posted by Anonymous on January 12, 2006 @ 7:04PM
Touchy touchy! You know, a good calendar includes our holidays as well as those of our neighboring countries. You know, so we can be good neighbors and wish them a happy whatever-the-day-is.

Do you get mad when people tell you when their birthdays are? I can just picture it....

"Hey buddy don't push YOUR birthday on ME ok?!! Am you part of my family?? Did you come out of my mother and I just don't know about it?? Go back to your OWN dirty genetic line and don't go around trying to infect your joy and good spirit to your fellow humans, because none of us cares if its your birthday or the day you crawl into a ditch and die!!!"

Sheesh. I think the mexican and canadian holidays are keepers as they are good to know and so many GOOD AMERICANS enjoy sharing the culture and celebrations of their friends and neighbors.

Unofficial Holidays

If this calendar gets "junked up" with too many unofficial holidays, there will need to be ANOTHER calendar for US HOLIDAYS.

Agreed
Posted by iCalShare on July 3, 2003 @ 10:34AM
I couldn't agree more on this.

That said, if you've subscribed to this calendar and you want to add some custom holidays to YOUR copy of this calendar, here's how to do it:

1. Quit iCal.
2. Go to ~/Library/Calendars
3. Move the 'US Holidays' calendar to your Desktop.
4. Relaunch iCal.
5. Quit iCal again.
6. Drag 'US Holidays' from your Desktop back to ~/Library/Calendars.
7. Relaunch iCal.
8. Presto! iCal will now allow you to customize this calendar all you want. (Note: you won't be subscribed anymore, but there really aren't updates to this calendar--so no biggie.)

Cheers,

Hanukkah
Posted by Anonymous on December 10, 2003 @ 10:45PM
Well, as with all Jewish holidays, the first "day" of the celebration as noted on the Julian calendar is the 20th is technically correct. The Jewish day would start at sundown the evening before which would be the 19th. If you put the 19th on the calendar without the notation "first night of Hanukkah" or "Hanukkah starts at sundown" or something to that effect, you may have some confusion. Otherwise, leaving it as all other Julian calendars have it noted as starting on the 20th would probably be the best thing to do.

Just my Hebrew 2 cents worth.

Thanks for the correction...
Posted by iCalShare on December 11, 2003 @ 9:19AM
I'll keep it on the 19th, but will add '@ sundown' to the event name just to be clear.

Just curious... does Hanukkah also end mid-day?

No Holidays in 2005???
Posted by Anonymous on May 3, 2004 @ 1:39PM
It's May 2004, and this calandar preview has no holidays listed for 2005? The Apple calandar does list 2005 but has Easter in FEBRUARY!

Oops, correction on 2005.
Posted by Anonymous on May 3, 2004 @ 2:08PM
Sorry, for some reason no holidays for 2005 showed up the first time I tried the preview. They did the next time I looked. But only the date dependant holidays.

So, when will the rest of the holidays for 2005 be added? We ARE half way through 2004.... (God, how did that happen already?).

The calandar is great though, thank you for doing it!

Regarding annual holidays ...
Posted by Anonymous on May 24, 2006 @ 12:25AM
Some holidays (Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Labor Day and so forth) don't repeat every year to the date, but instead to a specific day of the week (a Thursday, Monday or Tuesday, for example). I have found that by setting them to repeat every 52 weeks on a specific day of the week, rather than simply every 1 year, gets the holiday to hit the proper day. I believe this method would also work for start & stop dates for Daylight Savings Time. However, Thanksgiving sometimes misses this and I haven't found a workaround yet.

That said, making these changes would make this particular iCal file more accurate.

Columbus Day
Posted by Aaron W on October 28, 2004 @ 7:22PM
There are many people who feel that celebrating Columbus Day is not appropriate because of the death and exploitation that Christopher Columbus and his entourage brought to Native Americans. So we co-opt it and call it "Indigenous Peoples Day" or "Indigenous Peoples Solidarity Day".

I think it might be appropriate to rename the entry "Columbus Day / Inidigenous Peoples Day." I would drop the name Columbus altogether - though I know that would cause a fair share of complaints :)

What do you think?

Thanks, this is great. One comment: I still do not see Good Friday there. This is an official holiday in the U.S. for the New York Stock Exchange, all stock and bond trading and all stock and bond brokerage firms. I don't care about the religious aspect but my firm is closed on that day. I think it would be helpful for many to have this holiday noted. Thank you very much again.

Mothers everywhere will say, "what a little runty ingrate jerk." And the poor sons and husbands who will receive the hairy eyeball for the rest of the year for failing to plan for this important observance...I can't imagine what they'll be calling you.

Missing the point
Posted by almostHandsome on November 11, 2008 @ 11:00PM
I think that some people are missing the point. SOME but not most Americans are interested in Mexican holidays. These people should subscribe to both the US and the Mexican holiday calendars. I am interested in German holidays, so I subscribe to both the US and German calendars. The reason we shouldn't have Mexican holidays on a US calendar is because they are misclassified. And BTW, I'm sure glad I can set the US and German holidays to different colors.
